COURSE DESCRIPTION

// Who is this course for?

This NVQ Level 2 and 3 – Beginner in Master Barbering course is specifically designed to provide students with an intensive 14-week course in which they will learn the necessary practical and theoretical skills to either work in a barber shop, or become a freelance barber.

A good understanding of the English language is essential and applicant’s may be asked to attend an interview prior to starting their course.

The VTCT (Vocational Training Charitable Trust) Level 2 & 3 NVQ Diploma is an internationally recognised qualification. It is linked with the World Federation of Hairdressers, National Hairdressers Federation and the Complementary Therapists Association (CThA) for insurance purposes and support.

// What will I learn during this course?

This course is taught by qualified educators who incorporate theory work, demonstrations and hands-on workshops. Your tutor will guide you through the stages of the course and monitor your personal progress. All necessary equipment, styling tools and manuals are provided.

Throughout the course you will have your own clients to enable you to build a portfolio of all your work, consisting of photographic evidence and practical assignments.

You will be assessed in both theory and practical areas throughout this course. You will practice on members of the public throughout this course.

Students are required to bring in a camera to take photos during this course as part of their portfolio of evidence for assessment purposes.

Cut Men’s Hair Using Basic Techniques

  • Be able to cut hair using basic barbering techniques
  • Know how health and safety policies and procedures affect cutting services
  • Understand the factors that influence cutting services
  • Understand the tools, equipment, and products used in basic barbering techniques
  • Cutting styles such as uniform layers, graduation, fringes, partings, outlining the ears, fading, skin fades*, balance and shaping sideburns.

*skin fades are not included in the NVQ Level 2 criteria. The London Hair Academy however will try to cover skin fades on this course dependant on how skilled a student is and how they are progressing through the course and dependant on how many clients are available during the course. 

Cut Facial Hair to Shape Using Basic Techniques

  • Be able to cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques
  • Know how health and safety policies and procedures affect facial hair cutting services
  • Understand the factors that influence facial hair cutting services
  • Understand the tools, equipment, products and techniques used to cut facial hair shapes 

Dry and Finish Men’s Hair

  • Basic styling and finish men’s hair
  • Use a range of styling techniques to dry men’s hair to create a variety of finished looks
  • Working with a wide range of styling and finishing products
  • Maintain a high level of health, safety and hygiene throughout your work
  • Be able to give your client advice and recommendations on the service provided

Create Basic Outlines and Detailing in Hair

  • Be able to create basic outlines and detailing in hair
  • Know how health and safety policies and procedures affect creating basic outlines and detailing services
  • Understand the factors that influence basic outlining and detailing services
  • Understand the tools, equipment, products and techniques used to create basic outlines and detailing in hair

Advise and Consult with Clients

  • Be able to consult with and advise clients
  • Understand the relevant policies and procedures when carrying out consultation services
  • Understand the science of hair, skin and scalp

Shampoo, Condition and Treat the Hair and Scalp

  • Be able to shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • Know how health and safety policies and procedures affect shampooing, conditioning and scalp treatment services
  • Understand the science of shampooing, conditioning and scalp treatments
  • Understand the products and techniques used in shampooing, conditioning and scalp treatments

Fulfil Salon Reception Duties

Assist with Shaving Services

  • Be able to assist basic skills of shaving services
  • Maintain effective and safe methods of working when assisting with shaving services
  • Prepare facial hair for shaving services
  • Assist with shaving services as instructed
  • Understand the correct use of products, tools and equipment
  • Be able to outline the types and causes of problems that may occur when assisting with shaving services

Creatively Cut Hair Using a Combination of Barbering Techniques

  • You will need to maintain a high level of health, safety and hygiene throughout your work.
  • Be able to maintain effective and safe methods of working when cutting hair
  • Be able to carry out Advanced cutting skills to create a personalised and individual restyle that enhances personal image
  • Understand and Creatively cut and style hair using a combination of barbering techniques
  • You will also need to maintain a professional personal appearance and demonstrate effective communication skills.

Design and Create a Range of Facial Hair Shapes

  • Be able to create a range of facial hair shapes
  • You will need to redesign and cut or re-shape beards and moustaches
  • The ability to create moustache-only shapes, full and partial beard and moustache shapes using a variety of cutting techniques

Provide Shaving Services

  • This unit is about the skills needed to deliver a professional shaving service.
  • The preparation and use of professional shaving tools is required.
  • You must be able to include a good knowledge and understanding of the application of finishing products to suit the needs of your client.

Provide Client Consultation Services

  • You will need to be able to a comprehensive consultation and advisory service to clients
  • Be able to fully engage with your client to meet their needs and expectations
  • Have a variety of communication skills to gather key information
  • Make suitable recommendations for services and with results analysis the hair and scalp
  • The ability to provide advice including alternative courses of action, such as referral to other specialists, is also a requirement

Design and Enhance your Creative Hairdressing Skills

  • Develop and Enhance your Creative Hairdressing Skills
  • Be able to develop your creative skills in a way that enhances your own professional profile
  • Gain the ability to research plan and create a range of images

  • To be able to change hair colour using semi-permanent, quasi permanent, permanent and lightening products.

  • The ability to colour a full head, a partial head, re-growth and the creation of highlight and lowlight effects
